Day 05 – Barcelona to Vic…

After a very late night last night, neither of us actually surfaced until about 10am this morning, both still feeling a little groggy from the previous evening’s celebrations!

However, we didn’t want to waste too much time lazing around in our luxurious hotel…

…so we did the breakfast thing, drank plenty of coffee, and headed out to explore the city of Barcelona, bumping into some of the wildlife on the way…

We found a variety of other interesting characters on our tour of the city..

…as well as some fantastic sights and buildings…

We were almost tempted to use public transport…

…but decided to walk instead. Obviously this took its toll on my poor feet..

…however, after what seemed like miles, we eventually found the thing we most wanted to see in Barcelona…

The fantastic “La Sagrada Familia”. Designed by Antoni Gaudi, it has been under construction since 1882 , and is still far from being completed, although they continue to work on it even as we speak. (we strongly believe the project manager should be fired!!).

Inside it is a huge building site, full of scaffolding and construction equipment, although certain sections are most impressive…

We took a lift up one of the early towers that had been completed in the 1920’s. At the time of his death, (1926) only 1 of the towers had been constructed, and there are now 8 fully completed, with a further 9 planned.

This picture was taken looking down the small stairwell of one of the towers…

We also visited the Barcelona Cathedrale, which was much more traditional in style, not too mention finished, however I suspect the Project manager may have been an ancestor of the one used by Gaudi, as this Cathedrale began construction in 1298, but wasn’t fully completed until 1913! Based on this, I guess Gaudi’s project still has another 500+ years still to run!

You’ll be relieved to hear that the history lesson is now over! We returned to the hotel for coffee and used some more of our pre-paid wireless 2mb internet access, in order to upload lots of photographs for you lucky people to enjoy!

Our evening stop and home for the next three days is just outside a town called Vic, and the drive here was pretty uneventful (just the usual dodging of mad Spanish drivers) but produced some stunning views…

We arrived at the hotel by around 8pm, checked in and unloaded the car, and were dismayed to discover the view from our bedroom window…

The outside of the hotel was no less impressive to look at either!!

We’re going to go in search of dinner now, so we’ll leave you with our itinerary for the next three days, so you’ll know exactly where to find us if you need us!!

Until the next update, bye bye for now!
