Day 06 – Memminger to Middelfart
Welcome to Day 6 of the extended Tour de Liberation!
We woke up today to find the daytime view of last nights stop was pretty impressive..
..but as this is an "unofficial tour of Europe in an unfeasibly short timescale", we didn't have time to admire it for long, and were soon heading out of this charming town and back on the road.
We've not covered as many countries today (it was kinda hard to match yesterday really!), however we have covered 649 miles, almost all of which were on German Autobahns; in fact, it was all on the same Autobahn – the A7.
One long road that starts at the bottom of Germany and goes all the way to the top of it – and we've driven on pretty much every kilometre of it!
Today has seen us do plenty of high speed driving…
…and burn many litres of fuel; our worst consumption today was 16mpg. The best wasn't much higher!
But fear not, it was decent fuel that we were burning up at that rate of knots...
5 consecutive stops for V-Power in fact – gotta get it whilst we can!
We only passed three Police cars today. Well, we only saw three. The first was crawling along in the slow lane at 80mph; we passed it at over 125mph. The second was parked up on the side of the motorway; we passed it at 155mph. The third one, well we didn't actually pass. It passed us, promptly pulled up in front of us and a signed appeared on its roof saying Bitte Folgen.
I think that's German for "Good going mate" – but we thought we'd better stop and see what they wanted.
It transpires they were going to nick Mike for driving whilst in charge of a laptop, video camera and talking on the phone, but they realised their mistake as soon as they walked up to us, and were most apologetic for pulling us off the road!
We considered our options and decided to let them off, returning to the Autobahn for more fun!
We stopped a few times along the way for coffee and fuel, popped into Daisy's Diner for lunch..
…passed many a modern motor car…
…checked we had enough Oil (gotta keep the warranty intact somehow!)
And had LOADS of this:
(Don't worry, I did slow down when visibility was this bad.)
…which in turn caused a few of these.
We finally crossed the border just before 8pm…
(It's just a shame they don't know how to spell their own country!)
It was just before we crossed the border that Mike pointed out that we had driven the entire length of Germany in a car sporting two stickers celebrating the Liberation of Europe from the Germans! Hmmm…. Looks like we got away with it this time!
Mike has once again plotted and navigated us to the door of a fantastic hotel, although I'm beginning to wonder if they were expecting us already…
The temperature has gradually been dropping as we have travelled further north, and when we got out of the car at 8.45pm it was around 8 deg C. Mike has finally discarded his shorts in favour of slightly warmer attire!
Once again, no GPRS coverage on any of the networks in the area, but wireless hotspot courtesy of TDC! 2 hours for 50DKK! We think that's pretty good! Check out their website, it's fascinating and I'm sure they'd be delighted at the increase in hits! http://www.tdcmobil.dk/en/lcpid/mdcom/
So we will once again leave you with today's route, and thank you once more for the Guest Book feedback and emails. Everyday we seem to add at least one more email address to the list! There will be a prize for the Millionth. It could be you!
Until the next one, good night and thanks for reading!
