DAY 6
Day 6 - Italy to Austria.....
Well hello again everyone.... those of you who are still interested (and judging from all the emails, there is still good reason to continue Publishing!!) will be relieved to hear that we have once again managed to find high speed internet access with ability to upload our pictures! (it was slightly harder work however... a) we have to pay for the privelidge and b) there were no free USB ports, so we had to unplug the mouse, and learn how to use a keyboard - and the austrians have a rather unusal keyboard layout... WHY have they swapped Y and Z??!)
Anyhow, 37mins remaining on our paid-up time, so without further ado, let the adventure begin once more!
We left our hotel this morning at 10am, after what was in fact our longest nights sleep since leaving Jersey (why then were we more tired now than we have been all week?)
We soon found our way to the Motorway (or "Autostrada" as they appear to be known as in Italy).... (cue obligatory road shot....)
.... and made our way to our first stop just across the Italian border into Austria, passing some beautiful sites along the way...
Upon crossing the Austrian border, we enjoyed a leisurely Chicken and Chips in the Euopean equivalent of the Little Chef ...i.e. Autogrill, whilst looking out the window on the restuarant at stunning views like this one...
... and this one..
After lunch, we headed back onto the Motorway, and across the border, this time into Germany... an unexpected but most fortuante thing, as on our next fuel stop, still in Germany, we found ourselves in the motorsports equivalent of heaven...
100 Octane fuel, and we hadn't even had to go as far as Japan!
I was in my element, and am now considering moving to Germany! (for those who can't understand why this is so exciting, just ask someone who knows.... i know many of you will undoubtedly share my excitement....i think?! Or maybe i'm just sad?
Anyhow.... moving onwards!
After squeezing every last cubic millimetre of fuel into the tank, a cup of German coffee later and we were once again back on the motorway, proud owners of a Vignette (Austrian Motorway pass), and headed back across the border into Austria!
Our intended destination in Austria was Salzburg, birth place of some composer chappy named Mozart, however at 10am this morning, the 300+ mile trip had seemed a fairly tall order... however, 4.30pm saw us entering the city through the most impressive great rock...
We followed Mike's navigation (with a small helping hand from Autoroute) to what was supposed to be a Novotel, but in fact turned out to be an NH Hotel.... however, it had secure underground parking, which to me is priceless, so we got ourselves booked in and unloaded our usual collection of bags, laptops, chargers, phones, camera's, cables.. oh and a few items of clothing of course..
Without any delay, we began our walking tour of the lovely City of Salzburg (yes Mum, i said walking... impressed huh?!) where we saw some beautiful sites... a small selection of which now follows:
for those of you with slow internet connections..... don't be so tight... get ADSL!!! ;-)
Anyway, we bumped into an old friend...
..stopped for a quick chat, then had a lovely cup of Austrian coffee and a slice of cake at a charming cafe... rather similar to this one..!
We continued on our tour of the city, although i did have to spend a while trying to prise Mike away from one particular shop...!
For some reason, the Austrians seem to have round the year festive shops, however the boot is full, so no room for a Christmas tree alas..
Anyway, the Computer keeps telling me my time is running out, and we've yet to eat dinner, so time to go... hopefully by the time you get our next update, your PC's will have finished downloading all of these photographs..
Until the next update (who knows where we'll be by then) Auf Weidersen!
